“If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.”~ Wayne Dyer

If you change the way you think, you can change your life. I developed my life’s philosophy by standing on Philippians 4:8 “And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.” We may not have the power to change life situations or past traumatic events, but we can control how we allow those things to affect our everyday functioning. When we learn to use cognitive flexibility and reframing, it helps us to interrupt and redirect our negative thoughts. It allows us to see things from a new perspective, giving us a more positive outlook.

As a therapist, I aim to develop a trusting relationship and offer a safe and supportive environment that fosters growth through acknowledgment and unconditional acceptance. To assist clients with developing the necessary skills to navigate their mental health journey, in addition to helping them discover their true identity, needs, desires, strengths, and God-given purpose. I pride myself in creating a non-judgmental environment where my clients feel safe, knowing they are both seen, heard, and valued.

My Experience Makesha Givs

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor-Associate who specializes in generalized anxiety, depression, coping skills, life transitions, and childhood trauma issues impacting college, work, and relationships. My special interests include working with individuals struggling with social anxiety, growing in their relationship with God, low self-esteem, family dynamics, and relationship issues.

I use an integrative approach in counseling, allowing me to follow the client’s lead and use techniques that work best for them. The base of my practice is cognitive-behavioral, meaning I will assist clients with understanding how their thoughts affect their actions and the importance of thinking for a change.  I also utilize solution-focused, person-centered, and faith-based principles to ensure clients can make healthy life changes and efficiently accomplish their goals.

My Education

I received my undergraduate degree in Psychology from Southern University and earned my Master of Arts in Mental Health Counseling from Southern University. In 2017, I graduated from Texas Southern University with a Doctorate of Education in Counselor Education. I am licensed by the State of Texas as a Licensed Professional Counselor-Associate, and I am currently under the supervision of Clinical Director Shahidrah Cowgill, PhD(c)., LPC-S, NCC.
