freddy eWould you know if someone close to you was crying out for help?  How would you respond? According to the CDC, an average of one person dies by suicide every 16.2 minutes and a majority of those deaths are never sensationalized or publicized about.  When social media comes into play, access to tragic news is instantaneous and it’s vibrations can shake the world.

On January 5th, an aspiring hip hop artist and YouTube personality, Freddy E,  took to twitter to tweet his chilling last moments to his followers.  At age 22, he expressed feelings of helplessness, hopelessness, hurt, loss and fear of living alone through his spoken word poetry and tweets.   It wasn’t apparent to on-lookers that behind his infectious smile, charm & fun personality that there was darkness and deep despair within.

Some Quick Facts from the CDC:

  • For young people 15-24 years old, suicide is the third leading cause of death.
  • The strongest risk factor for suicide is depression.
  • Substance abuse is also a risk factor for suicide.
  • Research has shown medications and therapy to be effective for suicide prevention.
  • Many who attempt suicide never seek professional care.

When death by suicide becomes the only option, something is seriously wrong. It is the ultimate sign of disconnection from one’s life purpose and of broken relationships.  Acknowledging that there is a problem and  recognizing that you don’t have to figure it all out by yourself is the first step.  Suicide is never the answer.  Just as seasons change, eventually situations will, too.  Help is available.  Be courageous, seek it and ask for it.
